Shopping can be great fun in Kolkata as the city is full with markets and malls that offer something for every age group! It is particularly known for handicrafts, sarees and terracotta items. If you are good at bargainingl, you’ll get some great deals.
Some of the “must-go” shopping destinations in the city are :
New Market :
Located on Lindsay Street, New Market, also known as Hogg’s Market, is Kolkata’s oldest and most well known market. It’s got over 2,000 stalls and is a bargain hunter’s delight. If you have a nose for sarees, head to the reconstructed section of the market. You’ll find a lot to choose from here. For getting trendy and cheap stuff , visit this market in the evening as street vendors sell cheap jewellery and eye catching bags in front of the market. This market is closed on Sundays and open on all other days from 10 a.m to 8 p.m and until 2.30 p.m on Saturdays.
Dakshinapan Shopping Center:
This open air shopping center is an excellent place to buy Indian handicrafts and artifacts. There are many Indian state government emporiums with fixed price goods from all over the country. Its also the best place to find cheap Indian clothing. It is located on Ghariahat Road in Dhakuria, near the flyover (overpass). It is open on Tuesday to Saturday 11 a.m. to 7.30 p.m., and Mondays after 2 p.m. It is closed on Sunday.
The Forum Mall :
This is Kolkat’s first and one of the best shopping malls. It houses an appealing range of world class stores over six floors. It’s all about fashion at the Forum, and there are so many beautiful clothes, accessories, and shoes to choose from. The Forum also houses a cinema, bar, and one of Kolkata’s best restaurants called “Oh! Calcutta”. It is located on Elgin Road. It is open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Tuesday to Saturday 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Mondays and closed on Sunday.
Chowringhee Road :
A huge variety of pavement vendors line Chowringhee Road from Park Street to New Market, selling everything from bizarre to tacky. However, you’ll find some wonderful terracotta wares, if you look through all the junk, which are a Kolkata specialty. It is located on Chowringhee Road, near the Oberoi Grand Hotel. Street vendors set up mostly towards the evening but other shops are open during the day. Many are closed on Sunday.
Chennai has proven to be a shopper’s delight, especially when it comes to traditional wear like wedding sarees, silk sarees, kanchipuram silk sarees and a lot more. There are quite a number of shopping centers in Chennai where you can step in to pick your choice but you should be good at bargaining!

Anna Salai :
Most of Chennai’s business and corporate offices are located on Anna Salai. The famous Anna Salai, formerly known as Mount Road has several emporiums lined up and covers a distance of almost 8 kilometers from North to South. The emporiums and malls offer a wide range of products that include clothes, jewellery, bags and shoes along with lip-smacking south Indian cuisine.
Pondy Bazaar :
Pondy Bazaar situated in T. Nagar is one of the most famous and important commercial hubs in Chennai. One can find a wide variety of elegant footwear, leather bags, crockery, toys, jewellery, cotton garments, stationary, music accessories, stuffed toys, plastic household goods and almost anything and everything. It is one of the liveliest places in Chennai.
Panagal Park :
This is another one-stop shopping destination as it has many commercial establishments and departmental stores. It is particularly famous for gold and diamond jewellery . Many prominent jewellery stores are located here. The area around Panagal Park is also known for its silk saree shops.
It is a well known shopping destination of Chennai. It contains some important tourist attractions and various shopping plazas and big departmental stores. Its hotels, shopping complexes, and clubs contribute to the general commercial appearance of the region. Fountain Plaza, Alsa Mall, Co-Optex, Cane n Bamboo are some of the shopping options.
Anna Nagar :
Anna Nagar in western Chennai is an important residential and commercial area, offering several shopping destinations. It is famous for branded and expensive items. It is well known for its retail shopping as it is home to some world class brands. The important names on Second Avenue are Food World, Gautier, Crocodile, Pizza Hut, Barista, Hutch Shop and Damro Furniture.
In my last post I talked about the major shopping destinations in Bangalore. But as I said, the city has a lot more to offer, so here I come with my next post about the shopping malls in Bangalore, which are known for their brilliant infrastructure, a wide range of brands and food courts.

Mantri Square :
Situated in the Malleswaram locality in Bangalore, Mantri Square is the largest mall in India. The mall boasts of over 10000 brands across different sections. It has over 250 outlets and the largest food court in Bangalore. You can get a variety of stores under one roof in this shopping mall.
It is the only mall in Bangalore to have 5 department stores – Lifestyle, Marks & Spencer, Reliance Trends, Pantaloons and Shoppers Stop – all under one roof.
Garuda Mall :
One of the largest malls of Bangalore, it is situated in the heart of the city,in the corner of the McGrath and Commissariat Roads in Bangalore. For fashion and accessories, it offers a wide range of brands to choose from. Some of them are Allen Solly, Van Heusen, Louis Phillipe, Marks and Spencer, Jashan, Soch, Allen Solly Women, Mustard, Esprit, Levi’s, Storm, Paris Bijoux, Accessorize, LP Premium, Baggit, Pepe Jeans, Provogue, Kilol, One Stop Milano, Mint.
The Forum :
Located on Hosur Road in Koramangla, it is one of the best malls of Bangalore and is a favourite hangout place for the youth. It is Bangalore’s first full-fledged mall with 11 cinema halls,a multi-story bookstore and other entertainement facilities.
From international brands like Tommy Hilfiger and Swarovski Crystals to traditional Indian brands are available here. The mall houses a huge number of shops over four levels.
The forum has opened a new mall called The Forum Value Mall in Whitefield, Bangalore which will house factory outlets.
UB City :
It is a destination to fashionista’s from all over the world, houses over 40 Luxury Brands under one roof. One of the most lavish malls in Bangalore, UB city mall is known for offering all the top end brands. It has an excellent infrastructure and a building which lits up in the evening. It mostly offers all the expensive brands like Jimmy Choo, Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Fendi, Omega and many others.
Sarojini Nagar, also known as SN, is one of the most sought after shopping destinations from where you can get the most fashionable and trendy clothes at the cheapest prices. Located in the posh south locality of Delhi, it is one of the liveliest and trendy markets in India.
The best thing about this place is that you can buy the most fashionable stuff at unbeatable prices. If you have a nose for shopping and if you are good at bargaining, this is the place to be!
Apart from a large number of branded and local showrooms, this market is full of street side shops selling clothes and accessories such as footwear, belts, jewellery and handbags.
The clothes here are basically export rejects and brand surpluses. You can hunt for international and expensive brands and walk away with original Gap, Tommy Hilfiger and UCB, at very low prices, who’s to know anyway!
You can pick up T-shirts, dresses and tops at reasonable prices. Apart from clothes, you can find a good collection of shoes, handbags, belts and earrings. The place gives you an entire stylish look for as less as Rs. 1000 or less, if you are a good bargainer.
It is a hub for the trendsetters of colleges, from students with a tight budget, to bored housewives, tourists from other Indian states and even from abroad – they all converge here.
